Subject: ICQ99 (beta) Virus alert.

First off I would like to inform those of you that do not know me I do not pass rumors about viruses,on the contrary I try to stop them, see hoaxes.

As many of of you know Mirabilis is currently testing the "alpha" version of the next release of ICQ. There are several sites on the net that have acquired the program and have it available for download. I have this new version I and like it but I highly recommend that you wait till the official release. There are several reasons for this. Anyone can infect it with a virus (and has) or backdoor program and then pass it on. The second reason is that the alpha version of ICQ99 is undergoing continuous revisions, so even if you could find the current build today, it will probably be out of date in a short period of time.

Now the reason I sent you this letter is at least one of the "pirated" copies of ICQ99a being passed around is confirmed to have been infected with the W95.CIH virus. It should be noted that many of the virus scanners miss this virus, and worse yet but they can actually become infected with it and spread it to every file they check. If you are running a pirated copy of ICQ99a, you may want to download KILL_CIH and check for an infection.

I do not have any confirmation on this yet but I little doubt that Back Orifice (BO) is in some of the pirated copies. The best way I know to get rid of this is BoDetect.

OK I confess I have one of the newer version of ICQ and yes it is nice BUT is it worth risking damage to your files and the pain of getting a virus? The official final release should be available from Mirabilis soon.

Welcome to my hoax section if you encounter a message about a virus please send to [email protected] or call me on ICQ#22015420

I do not spread hoaxes! these pages are simply to inform other users that they are hoaxes. Please to not spread hoaxes. Hoax warnings are typically scare alerts started by malicious people - and passed on by innocent users who think they are helping the community by spreading the warning.

Do not forward hoax messages. There have been cases where e-mail systems have collapsed after dozens of users forwarded a false alert to everybody in the company. Corporate users can get rid of the hoax problem by simply setting a strict company guideline: End users must not forward virus alarms. Ever. If such message is received, end users could forward it to the IT department but not to anyone else.
