Boot-sector Viruses

Some viruses embed themselves into the boot sector of your hard disk. The boot sector controls how your computer boots up. (Makes sense don't it?) More one how the boot sector works

How to check for a boot sector virus

Follow these steps:

1) On the Windows 95 taskbar, click on Start.

2) Point to Programs

3) Click on MS-DOS Prompt

4) At the C prompt ( C:>) type CHKDSK

5) Press Enter

6) Several lists will appear

7) Near the end of the list, you should see an entry for 655,360 total bytes of memory.

Your computer probably has a virus if this number is more or less than 655,360. If you find a boot-sector virus, you should run an AntiVirus program immediately. Until you have removed the virus, avoid spreading it: don't send files over a network or the Internet, and don't transfer files from your computer to another via diskettes.
