First victim of Y2K the pioneer of the Internet Prodigy Classic
is being discontinued by Prodigy Communications Corp. This affects
208,000 customers. According to the Associated Press the company
is citing the Y2K problem. Prodigy notified customers nationwide
by e-mail late Friday it could not avoid the effects of the so-called
``Y2K'' problem and by October must shut down. The company said
the Year 2000 problem was not expected to affect the 433,000 subscribers
of its newer ``Prodigy Internet'' service, launched in late 1996,
and it encouraged its Classic subscribers to enroll there. Prodigy's
Classic service was launched nationally in 1990, long before popularity
of the Internet and its World Wide Web. So a tearful good by to
the forefather of the Internet.
